Market Street Bridges Rehabilitation

Construction will begin on March 17, 2025 to rehabilitate the Market Street Bridges that carry Market Street over the Amtrak railroad tracks, I-76, the Schuylkill River, Schuylkill Banks, and the CSX railroad tracks. The project includes rehabilitating the bridge structures and reconfiguring the traffic pattern on the Market Street Bridge to accommodate wide sidewalks and a separated two-way bicycle facility on the south side of the bridge that will connect to the existing Market Street Ramp trail access point on the east side of the river and the bicycle lanes on 23rd Street. The project will repair the west and east river walls supporting the Schuylkill River banks from Market Street to south of Walnut Street and repair the JFK Boulevard Stairs trail access point to address settlement. The contract also includes resurfacing the Walnut Street Bridge between 33rd and 22nd Streets and the installation of a parking-separated bicycle lane on the south side of the bridge.
This bridge rehabilitation project, which is being completed by PennDOT, is expected to take approximately four years to complete. See the image below for project phases. The Market Street Ramp trail access point will be closed during portions of bridge reconstruction. When this access point is closed, use the Chestnut Street Ramp to enter and exit the trail in this area. A portion of the trail under the Market Street Bridge will also close during reconstruction. This is expected to happen in 2026 and/or 2027 and a detour will be provided during that time.
The JFK Boulevard Stairs trail access point will be closed when PennDOT addresses that part of the project; the closure period will be announced on a later date. When the stair tower is closed, use the Race Street or MLK Jr Drive access points to the north or the Chestnut Street Ramp access point to the south to enter and exit the trail.
