Capital Projects Update
Bartram’s Mile
While most of the work on Bartram’s Mile is complete, opening of the new trail segment will be delayed until spring. Some landscaping and safety fencing need to be installed prior to the grand opening. The newly installed Newkirk Monument and Department of Streets “Clamshell” provide attractive reminders of the industrial past of the Schuylkill River.
South to Christian
Phase I of the South to Christian segment is being completed this month. The bids for Phase II—which includes landscaping, some irrigation work and the installation of various trail appurtenances—are due on January 20th. We are hopeful that this segment will be open by late spring or early summer. CHOP is completing work on their new pedestrian bridge, which will provide another welcome access point to the trail from their new trail-adjacent facility.
Schuylkill Crossing at Grays Ferry
The swing bridge just south of Grays Ferry Avenue has received concurrence from the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission that the plan to replace the 115-year old bridge with a new movable pedestrian bridge is the preferred alternative. We are seeking parties that may be able to reuse the old bridge at another location. It is advertised here. Next steps are to develop a Letter of Agreement as to historic mitigation and finalize design details.
