Sharing Schuylkill Banks

It's a tale as old as the Schuylkill River Trail. As days get longer and temperatures rise, the trail gets more crowded. Most of the time, everyone coexists beautifully, but occasionally we need a little bit of help. So here is a friendly springtime reminder of simple ways that you can make the Banks a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone!

Pedestrians

  • Keep to the right whenever possible, walking no more than two abreast when the trail is crowded.
  • Check both directions for traffic before crossing the trail.
  • If you stop moving, step out of the flow of traffic.
  • If you must wear earbuds, use only one and/or adjust the volume so you can hear other trail users.

Cyclists

  • Slow down or walk your bike when the trail is crowded.
  • Use signals when turning, slowing, or stopping.
  • Ring a bell to politely announce your presence to distracted trail users.
  • Walk your bike on ramps.

Those with pets or young children

  • Pets must be leashed at all times when in the park (unless you are in an official dog run).
  • Keep your pet on a short leash while on or near the trail.
  • Keep a close eye on young children and prevent them from blocking the trail or changing direction abruptly.

Anglers

  • Avoid fishing on narrow, low visibility trail segments, like under the Chestnut Street Bridge.
  • Take your bait, hooks, and line with you when you leave.

Everyone

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you witness harrassment, a serious injury, or any other emergency situation on the trail, call 911 immediately. Noting your location using the yellow and black help locator stickers on light poles along the trail will help responders pinpoint your location.

SRDC loves serving the thoughtful and considerate population that recreates and commutes on Schuylkill Banks. Thank you for making an effort to keep yourself and others safe and creating a friendly atmosphere on the Banks!
