Bartram's Garden
Bartram’s Garden is a 45-acre National Historic Landmark operated by the John Bartram Association in cooperation with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. It is an outdoor classroom, living laboratory, community garden, and membership organization for ever-expanding audiences. Bartram’s Garden is America’s oldest preserved botanic garden and includes what is believed to be the oldest standing barn in Philadelphia County. John Bartram established this farm and garden in 1728 and began gathering the world’s most varied collection of North American plants. After three generations, the property was purchased by industrialist Andrew Eastwick in 1850 who, along with Thomas Meehan, preserved the garden and buildings rather than convert the site for industrial use. Today, you can visit the historic site, which became part of the public park system in 1891. Learn more at bartramsgarden.org.
